This gift tag was embellished with an embossed butterfly made with two butterflies placed together.
Project designed by Lorie Jacobs.

Materials:

embossing templates
light box or light source
embossing tool
wax paper
3" x 5" or 4" x 6" index cards
assorted colored paper
mounting tape
scissors
heart paper punch
rectangle paper punch
water colors
round paint brush
water
white glue

Steps:

1. Position an embossing template on a light source, then position the front flap of a folded index card over the template with the back side facing up (figure A).

2. Rub a piece of wax paper over the area to be embossed.

3. Using your embossing tool, apply pressure and move the tool along the cut-out edges of the template (figure B). If embossing letters or a design that looks better facing one direction, be sure to place the templace backward on the light source.

Painting

4. Add five or six drops of water to a small container or palette. Add paint to the water to achieve a desired color. Add enough glue to get a consistency of yogurt (figure C).

5. Paint the embossed image as desired by dabbing the paint with a brush (figure D).

5. If desired, paint parts of the image with diluted glue and sprinkle with glitter.

Making a light box

  • Place a night light with an extension cord under a glass dish.
  • Choose a light source (such as a flexible lamp) and a piece of glass or Plexiglas. Stack books or other objects to hold up each end of the glass. Tape a piece of lightweight paper over the glass to act as a diffuser. The glass should be high enough so that the light source can fit beneath.
