Pounding Heart Card

Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-506 -- More Projects »
This terrific origami card was designed by guest Jeremy Shafer, origami expert extraordinaire. Shafer calls his card the "Heart Attack." The design is based on an origami-folded frog's tongue mechanism with a folded heart on the end. Shafer provides the instructions for the mechanism here.

We made a reasonable facsimile of Shafer's "Heart Attack" card by folding the mechanism as instructed below and taping a heart cutout onto the end.

This pounding heart card springs back and forth when you push on the folded paper mechanism.

This origami-folded "giant frog's tongue," operated here by guest Jeremy Shafer, is the same sort of mechanism used for the pounding heart card.

Materials:

2.5" X 8.5" rectangle of card stock paper
2-1/2 to three-inch wide paper heart
tape or glue

Steps:

  1. Valley-fold and unfold in half the long way, turn over (figure A).
  2. Valley-fold and unfold, reversing the existing crease. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 ten times, so that the crease is completely androgynous. Turn over.
  3. Valley-fold in half and don't unfold.
  4. Valley-fold the lower right corner to the upper left corner (figure B).
  5. Valley-fold bottom to top (figure C).

Figure D
  • Make a second valley fold from the bottom to the top (figure D).
  • Completely unfold the model (figure E).
  • Using the existing crease lines in the model, fold every other set of horizontal creases using a mountain fold (figure F). Fold the set of creases following each mountain into valley folds. It is important not to alter the angle of these creases. They need to be slightly slanted, NOT vertical.

The model will resemble a V-shaped accordion (figure G).
  • Unfold the model and reverse the folds so all the mountain folds are valleys and all of the valley folds are mountains. Repeat until all of creases are loose.
  • If desired, valley-fold edge to edge. This sequence of folds will improve the shape of the mechanism, make it more sturdy, and make the starting length shorter so it shoots out even farther. Completely unfold and mountain-fold along existing creases.
  • Re-fold the mountain and valley folds and give the right-most mountain fold 10 extra creases. The mechanism is now complete.
  • To turn this springy "Frog's tongue" mechanism into a surprise valentine, cut out a heart shape that's approximately 2-1/2 to three inches wide and valley-fold it in half by creasing it evenly down the center. Position the mountain-side fold of the heart into the valley-fold side of the mechanism and tape or glue the sides of the heart into the mechanism so it springs forth when the mechanism is opened.

To eject the heart, grasp each side the mountain-fold outer layer of the mechanism with a thumb and index finger, and abruptly pull each side of the paper in opposite directions. To retract, hold the mechanism as directed above and push your fingers together quickly to make it snap back.
