Project designed by Jane Beard.

Materials:

Museum of Modern Rubber rubber stamps:
- Pop Bottle #L-810
- Bubbles #F-812
- Straw #E-813
- World's Greatest Pop #C-811
- Bottle Cap #A-814
two pieces of 5" x 7" card stock
5" x 7' foam board
two small pieces of acetate
Crystal Lacquer - optional
Color Box Crafter's Ink - optional
embossing powder
BEEDZ beads
foam mounting tape
tools - ruler, craft knife, glue/tape, stamp pads, scissors

Steps:

  1. Stamp the pop bottle image in the center of the cardstock. Stamp background design. Cut out center of the top part of the glass. Trace this opening to the second piece of paper and cut out.
  2. Transfer the window opening onto a piece of foam board and cut the opening slightly larger. Cut an equal size opening above for the reservoir, leaving a small neck at the center.
  3. Stamp the soda pop bottle design onto acetate using Colorbox Crafter's Ink or other permanent ink. Heat set or allow to air dry according to manufacturer's directions.
  4. Glue a piece of acetate to the inside of the back piece of cardstock. The acetate side will be next to the foam board.
  5. Fill the reservoir with beads. Glue the front layer of the card to the top of the foam board.
  6. Apply Crystal Lacquer to the straw stamp. Stamp and cut the bottle cap on a separate piece of paper. Attach to the card using a piece of foam mounting tape. Different color beads can be added to create different "flavors" of pop.
Tips:
  • Design options for making a shakin' card are unlimited. The natural choices are open objects such as snow domes, bottles, jars, and fishbowls. Framed objects such as windows, frames, borders and wreaths also work well. Objects with doors that open such as picnic baskets, refrigerators, doors, and shutters make a fun variation also.
  • The material used for the window does not have to be acetate. Try sheer ribbon, window screen or colored cellophane instead.
  • Fillers! You name it as long as the filler is no thicker than the foam board. Almost anything can be used. Try candy, plastic fish and bugs, confetti, birdseed, rice, ball bearings and iron filings. If a larger object is used as filler, double the foam board or try using a 1/2" thick foam board.
  • The background inside of the window opening can be the image from the stamp, other stamp designs, photographs or printed papers.
  • Shakin' cards can be made with a single window opening, multiple openings, with a see-through window (like the pop bottle) or completely two-sided.
  • Cover the edge of the foam board ribbon or paper if desired.
