Project designed by Michelle Ross

Materials:

Y.I. Stamp, Ink! rubber stamp - #003 - discontinued
pint- or quart-size milk carton
1/2 gallon carton
8" x 9" piece of single ply chip board
fast-drying glue or hot glue
white glue
glue brush
craft knife with sharp blade
metal-edged ruler
cutting mat
see-through ruler
one-inch wide masking tape
scissors
marking pen and pencil
decorative paper
18- to 20-gauge wire
stick
tall tube beads
drill and bit

Steps:

1. Using a metal ruler for a straight edge, cut the pint-size milk carton to 2-3/8 inches tall (figure A).

2. On the cut edge, mark the center of each side of the carton. Draw a line from that mark to each bottom corner (figure B), creating a triangle.

3. Lightly score the lines with the craft knife.

4. Gently push the corners in and bend the box on the score lines (figure C ).

5. Push the corners in until the top edge makes a square shape (figure D).

6. Cut out a triangle template, taking the measurements from the triangular sides of the carton.

7. Trace and cut out eight triangles of chipboard. The triangles are not equilateral, so it is important to mark an X at the base of each one (figure E).

8. Measure and cut the following squares of chipboard:
- for the lid: a three-inch square and a 2-1/2-inch square
- for the bottom: a 2-7/8 -inch square
Write the size of each square in the center to prevent confusion.

9. Glue the triangles, according to their matching folds, onto the sides of the carton (figure F). Glue the 2-7/8-inch square to the bottom of the carton. Be sure that the X marks are alternating to where they either appear at the bottom or the top of the triangles on the box.

10. Tape all of the edges of the box with masking tape (figure G).

11. Cut decorative paper 3-3/4" x 12" (figure H). Stamp a design onto the paper.

12. On the back of the paper, measure and draw a line the length of the paper, one inch down from the top.

13. Following the guide line and using white glue, glue a paper strip to the carton and overlap the ends.

14. Snip the corners on the bottom of the carton and glue the excess paper down.

15. Spread glue on the top of the one-inch piece and press to the inside allowing it to pleat at the corners. Smooth and add glue as needed.

16. From the large milk carton, measure and cut a 3-1/8-inch square. Glue it to the chip board and tape the edges.

17. From the decorative paper, measure and cut a square for the box bottom and glue in place. Measure a square for each lid piece that is a half inch longer on each side. Glue each piece to its matching piece of chip board (figure I), wrapping it (gift wrap style) to the inside.

18. Center and glue the lid pieces together, raw sides facing each other.

19. To finish the top, drill two holes in the top of the lid, and thread wire through the holes from the inside of the lid. Thread a tube bead on each end of the wire until it rests on the top of the lid. Wrap the ends of the wire around a small horizontal stick to serve as a handle (figure J).

Tip - To prevent bubbling, brush glue onto the paper instead of the box.
