To make the faux vinyl box, you need to make "vinyl" art sheets. Follow the instructions below.
Vinyl Art Sheets
Materials:
acrylic paint in four to six different colors
freezer paper
water
Steps:
- Cut two pieces of freezer paper to about 9" x 12" or smaller.
- Thin the acrylic paint to a heavy cream consistency by adding a small amount of water to the bottle. Shake well.
- Place one sheet of freezer paper on a smooth, flat surface with the shiny side up.
- With even pressure and a smooth movement, squeeze the paint onto the freezer paper in a continuous "S" pattern, working from top to bottom.
- Repeat the above step with each color of paint. Try to keep the colors next to one another, not letting them drizzle on top of each other.
- Place the second sheet of freezer paper shiny side down over the painted sheet of freezer paper (figure A). Rub lightly with your index finger as you lay the paper down, making sure there are no air bubbles.
- Continue to rub the surface of the paper to ease the paint outward toward the edges.
- Now, gently rub the palm of your hand across the entire surface to make sure the paint is evenly distributed between the two sheets of paper.
- Starting at the lower right-hand corner, slowly lift the top paper. Continue to lift the paper, pulling it diagonally toward the upper left-hand corner until the two sheets are separated.
- Keep the vinyl art sheets on a flat surface to dry. Let them sit for about twelve hours.
Vinyl Box Materials:
8-1/2" vinyl art sheet
3-3/4" x 3-3/4" cardboard gift box
pencil
scissors
glue
spray adhesive
embellishments such as twigs, marbles, wire, beads, collage elements or Jana Ewy design rubber stamps: 1138-GG - Dog and 1134-GG - Cat
Steps:
- Measure and cut out a 5-1/8" x 5-1/8" piece of vinyl for the lid of the box, and a 5-7/8" x 5-7/8" piece of vinyl for the box.
- Carefully peel the vinyl from its paper backing. Place it on a flat surface wrong side up.
- Lightly coat all sides of both the lid and the bottom of the box with a spray adhesive.
- Using the smaller 5-1/8" square of vinyl, begin to center the box lid on it. Take the lid of the box and with the inside facing you, center and line up the edge of the lid on the edge of the vinyl. Press the lid down onto the vinyl to adhere (figure B). Slowly push the box lid away from you and onto the vinyl.
- Turn the lid over, and smooth the vinyl over the sides of the lid.
- Pinch the corners down around the lid, and trim away all excess vinyl.
- Repeat the above steps with the 5-7/8" piece of vinyl and the bottom of the box.
- Once you've completely covered the box with vinyl, embellish it to create your own unique box. In the featured project, guest Jana Ewy stamped a dog image onto a vinyl sheet, cut out the image, cut the image into pieces, then linked it together using jewelry findings (figure C).
