Steps:

1. Create a box from cardstock with the cardstock box measurements from the material list (figure A). Note: See tip from guest below for box making instructions. Score and cut as illustrated (figure B). Fold box and set aside (figure C).

2. Cut the remainder of the cardstock and cover board into specified sizes (material's list) (figure D). Cut an opening into the center of the top cover board one inch from each edge to create a 3-1/4" x 5-1/4" opening.

3. Glue cover board to the top and bottom cover paper; glue the spine cover to the spine.

4. Cut an 'x' inside the window on the top cover (figure E) with a craft knife. Score along the inside edges of the window, fold, trim and glue.

5. Trace an opening onto the inside cover for the photo box.

6. Measure eyelet holes 1-3/4 inches and 2-1/2 inches from the bottom of each side of the front cover; punch holes and set four eyelets (figure F).

7. Place transparency film over the cover, and mark eyelet holes and punch holes. Attach transparency to the inside cover with glue (figure G).

8. Thread fiber from the top hole down and up through the bottom hole on the left side of the frame. Thread the label charm and tie a knot to secure the charm. Bring fiber (front embellishment) ends down through the holes on the left side and secure at the back (figure H).

9. Trim corners from cover and wrap edges around to back and glue. Repeat with back cover.

10. Glue the front and back cover to the spine, leaving 1/8-inch space between spine and cover. Fold the top and bottom of the spine over the edges (figure I). Glue the inner spine cover into place.

11. Attach fiber box side closure to the front and back cover (figure J).

12. Glue the inside front cover in place.

13. Adhere box (from step 1) to the inside back cover (figure K).

14. Finish with photographs, memorabilia and decorative embellishments.

Tips:

  • Attach the inside front cover and box onto the back cover at the end of the project as this will allow you to insert side closures for your box.

  • Using the measurements for this project as a guide, use graph paper to sketch handmade boxes in different sizes with windows of different sizes and shapes.
