Guest Karen Thomas designed and demonstrated this project.
Materials:
3-3/4" x 11" sheet of bond paper
thin cardboard (cereal boxes work well)
origami paper
glue
1/8" wide ribbon
decorative paper scraps
bead
bone folder
scissors
double-sided tape
Steps:
1. Fold the bond paper in half lengthwise and unfold.
2. Accordion-fold it into eight sections lengthwise, creating eight creases intersecting one long crease (figure A).
3. Close the accordion and leave the two last ends out (figure B).
4. Cut through all sections except the last two (figure C).
5. Now you will have a long slit along the lengthwise crease (figure D) .
6. Accordion-fold the pages and create a cover with the two remaining sections (figure E). Decorate, draw or write on the book.
7. To create the matchbox bottom, cut a piece of thin cardboard 3-1/4" x 2-3/4 " and score 1/2 inch on all four sides. Cut slices at the four corner intersections (figure F) and fold up the sides of the box.
8. Secure with double sided tape (figure G).
9. Cut a 2" x 4" strip of origami paper and paste to the outside bottom (figure H).
10. Bring up the edges, fold and glue them around the sides of the box.
11. Cut a second piece of decorative paper1-1/2" x 4" and glue onto the remaining raw edges of the box.
12. Glue a 4-inch piece of ribbon to the bottom and glue a piece of decorative paper to cover the ribbon and the raw edges of the inside.
13. Tie a bead in the middle of a 6-inch length of ribbon and glue to the bottom of the box.
14. Cover ribbon with a piece of decorative paper and secure with glue.
15. To make the sliding top: Cut the thin cardboard to 2-1/16" x 5-1/8". Score along the length of the board 10/16 inch from the edge. Measure another 1-11/16 inch and score again. Then measure 11/16 inch more and score; then another 1-11/16 inch and score. Trim off any excess left there.
16. Glue a piece of decorative origami paper to the cardboard and fold over lengthwise edges (figure I). Trim excess on ends.
17. Fold box top along score lines and glue (figure J). Now you should be able to slip the box bottom into the sliding top!
