It's been a long time since I've done any quilling, but like a number of old favorites, it seems to be coming back into favor again. It's a nice craft, I think, because it's easy to learn, it's very inexpensive, the supplies don't take up much space at all, and from the very beginning, you can make a project that is pretty enough to give as a gift. Case in point was our quilling under glass paperweight, which was selected as our project once I found a great source for these pretty paperweights on the internet (see resource information below). Quilling supplies are usually available at your craft stores.

Materials:

quilling papers
needle tool or quilling tool
white glue that dries clear
toothpicks
waxed paper
tweezers
3 yellow seed beads
scissors
pencil
ruler
craft knife
sage card stock (approx. 4-1/3" x 5-1/2")
oval glass paperweight blank
mat board and cork to fit back

Steps:

1. You will need quilling papers in the sizes listed to make the following flowers:

3 fringed off-white flowers – 3 pieces 1/4" x 3"
3 light green S scrolls – 3 pieces 1/16" x 1"
1 pink flower – 6 pink teardrops 1/8" x 4"
1 tight yellow circle 1/8" x 1"
1 green curl for stem – 1/8" x 3"
3 green marquis for leaves 1/ 8" x 3"
1 green V scroll for leaves 1/8" x 3""
1 pink teardrop for bud 1/8" x 3"
2 periwinkle flowers – 6 tight periwinkle circles 1/16" x 1/2"
4 tight periwinkle circles – 1/16" x 1"
2 green bunny ears 1/8" x 3"
2 green stems 1/16" x 1/2"

Make these flowers, leaves, etc. before proceeding with the rest of the steps.

Note: See the photos below these instructions for an idea of what each quilled piece should look like.

2. Cut sage card stock to fit the back of the oval paperweight blank (figure A).

3. Place a piece of waxed paper on top of the oval paperweight blank and trace the opening (figure B). Cut out (figure C).

4. Position the waxed paper template in the middle of the sage card stock. Lightly trace onto the sage card stock (figure D). This will be your guide for the placement of your flowers.

5. Use a toothpick to put a tiny amount of glue onto the back of each flower piece and to place them onto the card stock. Tweezers can sometimes be a help in positioning the flowers. Be certain to stay within the traced oval (figure E).

6. Glue the card stock oval onto the oval mat board.

7. Fit oval mat board into the opening on the back of the oval paperweight blank (figure F).

8. Adhere the oval cork piece to the back of the paperweight blank to secure all pieces (figure G).

See the photos below for an example of what each quilled piece should look like.
