Project designed by Cheryl Stevenson.
Materials:
kaleidoscope templates (figures A and B)
fine-point pen
assorted prints of wrapping paper, wallpaper, collage or decorative paper scraps
scissors
spray adhesive
10" x 10" pieces of cardboard or heavy paper
cardboard box
hinged mirror tiles optional
Steps:
- Have kaleidoscope templates printed on acetate.
- Cut apart the pieces of the template using scissors. Place the template shape onto printed paper.
- If you have a hinged mirror, move it around on the printed papers to give you an idea of the different pattern that will be created by repeating the template shape. Note: Make a hinged mirror by taping two small rectangular pocket mirrors together to form an angle. Place a single piece of tape along the backside of the mirrors so the degree of the angle can be adjusted.
- Cut out all the template pieces. Cut two or three different kinds of paper for each piece. By varying the paper, a new pattern is created every time the pieces are arranged. Use the hinged mirror to view different pattern combinations.
- Arrange the printed paper template pieces according to pattern diagram (figure C). Place them printed side down in a cardboard box lined with newspaper. Spray the back with a spray adhesive.
- Reassemble the pieces as determined in step 5 onto cardboard or sturdy paper.
- Make eight color photocopies of the pattern.
- Cut out the triangles or diamond shapes, coat them with spray adhesive, and assemble the final kaleidoscope image.
