Steps:

  1. Design your trays with varying lengths and leg styles (figure A).

  2. Cut pine shelving and 2x2s to the desired lengths.

  3. Using either glue or screws, attach either two horizontal legs or four vertical legs to the bottom of the tray.

  4. Spray paint the bottom, sides and legs of the tray black.

  5. When the paint has dried, spray the top of the tray red, taping the edges and legs to protect them from the paint. Apply a couple of coats for a nice, smooth surface.

  • When the red paint has dried, apply the gold size with a paintbrush (figure B).

  • The glue dries pretty quickly, so when it's tacky to the touch, place a sheet of leaf gently on the surface, slide the liner sheet off and brush into place with a soft brush (figure C). Repeat until the top surface of the tray is covered.

  • Artfully arrange the pressed leaves on your tray and attach them with spray mount.

  • Dust the edges of the leaves lightly with black spray paint.

  • When paint is dry, peel off the leaves.

  • Apply a couple of coats of clear sealer and buff with furniture wax to give the surface a nice luster.
