Figure C
Designer Kelly Roland Warren demonstrates how to add color and texture to a glass display plate by combining layers of paint and fabric to match the decor (see photo at right).

Materials:

glass plate
household glue
scissors
fabric
sponge brush
white spray paint
paint
paintbrush

Steps:

  1. Make sure plate is thoroughly clean.

  2. Apply a thin layer of glue to the plate bottom of the plate (figure B).

  3. Cut out designs from fabric, and apply the cutouts to the plate.

  4. Be sure to measure the fabric a little larger than the plate.

  5. Place the fabric over the plate and press down, pushing out any wrinkles.

  6. Allow the fabric to dry.

  7. Turn the plate over and trim the outer edges of fabric around the plate (figure C).

  8. Spray the back of the plate with a thin coat of spray paint. Allow to dry.

  9. Paint on a border or design around the edges of the plate if you prefer.

  10. Continue decorating plate as desired.

  11. Allow to dry.

  12. Mount on wall or display on easel.

Tips

  • Flat plates work much better than plates with curved edging.

  • Make sure the plate has no scratches because these can show up against the fabric.

  • Be sure to use household glue that dries clear.

  • Use a larger plate to help draw a circle on the fabric that is to be used as the background. This allows the fabric to lay straight over the plate with no wrinkles.

  • The spray paint adds a solid white background to the fabric to aid in showing off the true color. Also, the spray paint helps take care of any frayed edging on the fabric.
