TIPical Mary Ellen host Mary Ellen Pinkham welcomes craft expert Mary Norton, who shares some great ideas for decorating glassware with paints.
  • Gather a variety of paintbrushes to handle different jobs. Start with a large, medium and a very fine brush. A sponge brush or specialized stencil brush also makes a nice tool.

  • Make a palette by covering a small plate with a piece of plastic wrap, then squirting out a small amount of each color onto the plate (figure A).

  • Use acrylic paint only on decorative glassware or on surfaces that will not come into contact with food or beverages. Certain types of glass paints are dishwasher safe.

  • Place stencil frames on glassware and just paint over the stencil (figure B). Practice first by painting stencil designs on pieces of wax paper.

  • After painting the glassware, let it dry for at least 24 hours. Be sure to bake the glassware before washing it. Just follow the baking directions on the paint can.

  • Some types of paint come with instructions recommending that glassware not be used for 10 days following painting.
