Painting Pottery Pieces
TIPical Mary Ellen : Episode TIP-555 -- More Projects »
Here's a neat trick for a colorful design: Squirt two or more small puddles of paint onto a paper plate, then drop a marble into each color (figure A). Roll the marbles around to thoroughly coat them with paint, then drop onto a pottery plate and roll them around to create a unique design (figure B).Firing painted pottery items in a kiln is not necessary. Paints that can be dried in a standard kitchen oven are available in craft stores. Just follow the directions on the paints. If the pieces are going to be used to serve food, make sure to get a paint that is safe for food.Always let the pottery air-dry for 24 hours before baking in the oven.
Specialized brushes aren't necessary to paint designs on pottery plates. Just be creative. For instance, a pencil eraser can be used to make a colorful polka-dot design (figure C). Use a plain watercolor brush or even a cotton swab to apply paints.
Sponges also make great tools for creating interesting designs. Use natural sea sponges or even plain old kitchen sponges.
Save some money by purchasing only the primary colors and mixing them yourself to create new colors.
Practice painting designs on a piece of paper before committing paint to the porcelain.
Make sure the pottery pieces are ovenproof. Usually a marking on the back or bottom of pottery pieces indicates this.
Make a special birthday plate for a family member by writing his or her name on the plate. Use it to serve his or her birthday meal on each year.
Create decorative plates for other holidays such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter and Valentine's Day.
Copy a favorite poem or lyrics to a song on a piece of pottery.
Use painter's tape to create stripes. Just remove the tape after the paint dries.
Stencils are a great way to create fun patterns on pottery. Just tape them in place and dab on the paint with a small sponge. Use a cotton swab for fine details.
Basic dots and swirls are easy to do and make beautiful designs.
