Host Kathi Cardinalli shows how to make a framed mirror with traditional bead board . The frame looks great in today's shabby chic decorating style.
Materials:
bead-board paneling, cut to the size that the mirror frame is to be (Cut out a center square or rectangle for the mirror to be placed behind.)
wood molding strips cut to fit around the outside of bead-board paneling
pull saw
drill and small screws
hot-glue gun
sandpaper
rags
wood putty
white flat latex paint
clear paste wax
mirror cut about 1 inch larger than center hole in bead board
heavy duty glue
soft cloths
eyehook screws and heavy duty wire, such as baling wire (from a home-supply store)
Steps:
- After cutting the molding with a pull saw (figure A), use a drill and screws to attach the pieces around the outside edge of bead-board frame. Attach the interior molding with hot glue (figure B).
- Use sandpaper (or palm sander) to smooth corners and edges all over frame. Wipe clean with damp rag.
- Fill screw holes with putty. Let dry and sand smooth.
- Paint all wood surfaces with a coat of white flat latex paint. Let dry. Lightly sand, then repaint (figure C). Let dry well.
- Use sandpaper to lightly remove some of the paint on the outside edges of wood. Wipe clean (figure D).
- Apply two coats of paste wax, letting dry between each coat and buffing after each coat.
- Turn mirror frame face-down on a cloth, such as a towel or drop cloth, and glue mirror over center cutout hole. Let set up well overnight.
- Turn mirror over and clean glass.
- Attach eyehooks on each outer upper edge of frame.
- Create a decorative wire hanger to hang mirror.
