Figure C
Host Renai Ellison demonstrates how to transform and add dimension to an unfinished wooden box by using geometric staining techniques.

Materials:

unfinished wooden box
tack cloth
vellum or transfer paper
pencil
gel stain (Minwax brand was used, but other types will also work.)
Stain Resist (available only from Nasco)
cotton swabs
sponge brush
clean rag

Steps:

  1. Sand an unfinished wooden box until smooth, then remove the dust with a tack cloth (figure A).

  2. Create a geometrical design and draw it onto vellum.

  3. Place the design face down on the top of the box, then scribble on the backside of the design to transfer the design to the box top (figure B).

  4. Apply gel stain to the ends and underside of the box (mahogany and maple stain were used on the show) and wipe off the excess (figure C).

  5. Trace the lines on top of the box with Stain Resist, which will help keep stain colors from bleeding together.

  6. Use a cotton swab to stain the geometric areas. Begin with one color on the swab and dab it inside the design. If there are symmetrical areas in the design, use the same stain at the same intensity for those similar areas.

  7. If you go outside the lines, cover the "mistake" with the color stain that adjoins it.
