Paisley Print (this technique combines stenciling with stamping)

Materials:

clear shelf paper
craft knife
scrap paper
fabric in desired color
foam stamps (#72033 Anemones, #72125 Leaf Grass, #72025 Square
Checkerboard)
acrylic paints (#02078 Straw, #02130 Sweetheart Blush, #02009 Seminole Green, #02015 Purple )
textile medium (#103000201)
wedge-shaped applicator sponges

Steps:

  1. Draw a paisley pattern on the paper side of shelf paper. Cut the design out with craft knife and set aside.
  2. Remove paper from shelf paper and adhere sticky side to fabric (figure A).
  3. Mix acrylic paints with textile medium following manufacturer's instructions, and pour paints onto paper plate.
  4. Load Straw paint onto flat edge of applicator sponge. Apply paint to fabric using paisley stencil.
  5. While still wet, leave stencil in place and load another applicator sponge with purple. Pat paint on anemone stamp and stamp anemone within the paisley stencil.
  6. Load another applicator sponge with Sweetheart Blush and pat paint onto checkerboard stamp.
  7. Stamp checkerboard within paisley stencil, and then remove the paisley stencil.
  8. When paint is dry, adhere reserved paisley cut from the clear shelf paper. Put it on top of the stamped area for protection.
  9. Load another applicator sponge with Seminole green, and pat paint onto leaf grass stamp.
  10. Stamp leaf grass overlapping the edge of paisley mask. Repeat process to add additional leaf grass.
  11. Remove paisley mask for finished motif (figure B) and repeat process for additional patterns.

Rose with Animal Print (this project utilizes the masking technique)

Materials:

foam stamps (#72079 Rosehead, #72088 Leopard Print)
stamping paints (#65006 Bright Red, #65029 Sweetheart Blush, #65026 Seminole Green, #65017 Hunter Green)
paper plate
applicator sponges
scrap paper
scissors
double-stick tape
fabric in desired color

Steps:

  1. Pour small amounts of each color paint onto the paper plate and use a separate wedge sponge for each.
  2. Load the flat edge of the wedge sponge with Bright Red and pat the paint onto the rose portion of the Rosehead stamp.
  3. Load the flat edge of a sponge with Sweetheart Blush and pat the paint to create blended colors onto the rose portion of the Rosehead stamp.
  4. Repeat the process using Seminole and Hunter Green to pat onto the leaf portion of the Rosehead stamp.
  5. Stamp onto fabric. Repeat process for additional roses.

To create a paper mask:

  1. Stamp the roses onto scrap paper and cut the images out with scissors.
  2. Use double-stick tape on the reverse side of the paper mask and adhere over the roses stamped on the fabric.
  3. Apply black paint to leopard print stamp.
  4. Stamp over masked roses to create an allover patterned print. Make sure to re-ink stamp after each impression.
  5. When done stamping entire leopard print pattern, remove rose paper mask (figure C).

Double Stamping Technique (this technique uses one stamp in tonal colors )

Materials:

foam stamps (#72001 Baroque Flourish Right, #72000 Baroque Flourish Left)
fabric paints (#10438 Sachet Pink, #10410 Fuchsia, #10417 Lavender, #10308 Violet)
paper plate
applicator sponges
purchased white curtain

Steps:

  1. Pour small amounts of each paint color onto a paper plate and load Sachet Pink onto the flat edge of the applicator sponge.
  2. Pat the paint onto the stamp and stamp on fabric.
  3. Use another applicator sponge to load Fuchsia onto the flat edge. Stamp over the Sachet Pink images, slightly off register to the right and lower than the previously stamped image.
  4. Repeat process for additional images in this color combination.
  5. Repeat process for the lavender/violet color combination, using different sponges for each color (figure D).

Stamping with Bleach (this technique uses bleach to remove color from fabric )

Materials:

foam stamp (#72090 Celtic Knot)
red fabric
applicator sponges
bleach

Steps :

  1. Pour a small amount of bleach onto a paper plate. Dip the flat edge of a sponge into the bleach and pat it onto the stamp. Stamp onto fabric.
  2. The image will bleach out momentarily (figure E).
  3. Repeat process for additional images.

Stamping on Patterned Fabric

Materials:

foam stamps (#72131 Fossil Swirl, #72078 Primitive Leaf)
stamping paint (#65004 Black)
paper plate
wedge-shaped applicator sponges
patterned fabric

Steps:

  1. Pour small amount of paint onto paper plate. Load flat edge of sponge with paint.
  2. Pat paint onto surface of foam stamp and stamp onto fabric (figure F).
  3. Re-ink stamp after each impression.

Fabric Stamping Tips:

  • Pre-wash fabric to remove sizing and press well.
  • Protect table with plastic from any ink seepage through fabric.
  • Heat-set paints to make permanent by ironing on reverse side of fabric. Always follow manufacturer's instructions.
