Materials:
glass plate

Pebeo paint thinner for cleaning brushes
rubbing alcohol
masking tape
gold leaf size
gold leaf
shellac
soft, synthetic size 4 round paintbrush
large soft paintbrush
Pebeo self-adhesive lead and boning tool

jar of water
Steps:
1. Place the pattern face up on the center of the bottom of the plate and tape with masking tape to secure.
2. Clean the face of the plate with rubbing alcohol to remove any traces of grease. Use the tube of black outliner to outline the design and leave to dry for an hour (figure A).
3. Paint the head and neck feathers of the bird in lemon, adding touches of crimson for shading (figure B). Wash the brush with water.
4. Paint the body and wings with turquoise and emerald, diluted slightly with stained glass varnish. Paint the tail feathers with lemon and crimson, allowing the design to dry for 24 hours.
5. Paint the back of the plate with size and leave until it dries clear.
6. Lay the sheets of gold leaf over the size-covered plate and rub flat with fingers (figure C). Brush off any loose gold leaf with a soft brush. Leave for 1-1/2 hours and then burnish with a soft cloth. Apply a coat of shellac to the back of the plate and allow to dry. Turn the plate over to the front side.
7. Measure and cut a piece of self-adhesive lead long enough to fit round the edge of the plate.
8. Peel off the backing and press it onto the edge of the rim. Rub it down firmly onto the glass and then trim the ends with a scalpel (figures D and E).
Safety tip: Do not smoke or eat while using the adhesive lead, and wash hands afterwards.
