Figure C
Project designed by Michelle Newman.

Materials:

Jacquard Dye-Na-Flow fabric paint:
- magenta
- bright green
- yellow
- cerulean blue
- violet
1-1/2" to 2" natural bristle or foam brush
9" x 54" or 15" x 60" white silk scarf
freezer paper
plastic cups
Susan Scheewe 1/4" flat brush
Winsor and Newton series 995 1/2" flat brush

Steps:

  1. Iron scarf onto the freezer paper, shiny side up. Do not place the iron directly onto the paper.
  2. Dilute the Dye-Na-Flow with water-approximately one part water to one part Dye-Na-Flow.
  3. Using the 1-1/2-inch brush, make large sweeping strokes to create a background with the diluted dye (figure A). Overlap colors to blend.
  4. Moving from one end of the scarf to the other, paint the rainbow colors in the following order-magenta, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet (figure B).
  5. Let scarf dry thoroughly.
  6. Go over portions of the scarf with undiluted dye to create accents. Use lines, dots squiggles or squares to create a pattern with either a 1/4-inch or 1/2-inch brush (figure C). Stencils may also be used.
  7. Heat set the scarf by ironing it on the reverse side of the pattern for 10 minutes. You can also place it in the dryer for 35 to 40 minutes on a high setting.
