Two of the hottest techniques in crafting are faux finishing and decoupage. Donna Babylon, from Krylon, mixes the two ideas together to create unique textures on any existing surface within your home.
Tissue Box Cover Materials:
wooden tissue box cover
sandpaper
Make It Stone paint
Crystal Clear Glaze finish
apron, gloves
images from wallpaper or wrapping paper
scissors
spray adhesive
Steps:
- Sand the wooden tissue box cover and wipe it with a tack cloth to remove any rough spots and residue.
- Spray an even coat of Make It Stone (Donna used Jade Stone) on all surfaces. After it has dried, cover the box with Crystal Clear Glaze finish. Always wear an apron and gloves during this step, and make sure you are in a well ventilated area.
- Select a decorative image from wrapping paper or wallpaper that matches the background paint color you are using.
- Cut out the shapes and place upside down on a paper. Cover with a light coating of spray adhesive. Let it set until it becomes tacky to the touch.
- Apply images to the box, then cover with a layer of Crystal Clear Glaze. Spray at least 12 inches away from the box for an even coating. It is better to do several light coats than one thick coat.
Marbleized Shelf Materials:
Make It Marble/Marble Kraft kit
sandpaper
wooden shelf
tack cloth
Steps:
- Sand the shelf and wipe with a tack cloth.
- Using the base color, spray the entire shelf and allow to dry.
- Using long sweeping strokes, spray a light covering of the marbleizing spray. You can always go back and add more if necessary. Spray all the sides, including the underside.
- Flick off any of the "spider webs" that may have formed in the shelf's corners due to the marbleizing spray, and allow to dry. No additional coating is necessary.
