World traveler Priscilla Hauser demonstrates how to paint in the traditional Dutch Folk Art style, performing several basic strokes for painting the bright floral design of the Dutch Assendelfter motif. An avid collector of art, Hauser also shares several traditional Dutch pieces from her own collection.

Materials

FolkArt Artists' Pigment Colors: True Burgundy, Payne's Gray, Turner's Yellow, Raw Sienna, Titanium White, Hauser Light Green, Hauser Medium Green, Green Umber
Plaid Blending Gel
paper towels
Masterson Stay Wet Palette
brushes: #1 liner, #10 Filbert, #6 Filbert
palette knife
Plaid water-based varnish, satin finish
1" sponge brush

Steps

Preparation
  1. Sand the wooden heart and wipe off the residue with a wet rag.
  2. Using the 1" sponge brush, apply two coats of Tapioca to the top flat surface and the outer bead trim.
  3. Lightly sand and then transfer the design using graphite paper.


Leaf Design
  1. Using a #10 Filbert brush, basecoat the leaves in Hauser Light Green, Hauser Medium Green and Green Umber.
  2. When dry, apply Blending Gel to each leaf just before it is painted, if desired.
  3. To paint the light leaves, use Hauser Medium Green double loaded with Raw Sienna, with comma stroke tips of Raw Sienna added.
  4. To paint the medium leaves, use Hauser Light Green double loaded with Green Umber, tipped in Titanium White and painted as a "blotting stroke," with comma strokes of Hauser Light Green added.
  5. To paint the dark leaves, use Green Umber double loaded with True Burgundy, tipped in Titanium White, and painted as a "blotting stroke," with comma strokes of Hauser Light Green added.
  6. To paint the stems, use Green Umber double loaded with Hauser Light Green. Highlight with a touch of Titanium White, if necessary.


Tulips
  1. Using a #10 Filbert brush, basecoat the tulips with Rose Pink, Turner's Yellow and French Blue.
  2. When dry, apply Blending Gel to each tulip just before it is painted, if desired.
  3. To paint a pink tulip, use Rose Pink double loaded with True Burgundy for the two side petals. Load again and tip in Titanium White for the center petal. Add comma stroke tips of Rose Pink tipped in Titanium White.
  4. To paint a yellow tulip, use Turner's Yellow double loaded with Raw Sienna for the two side petals, then load again and tip in Titanium White for the center petal. Add comma stroke tips of Turner's Yellow tipped in Titanium White.
  5. To paint a blue tulip, use French Blue double loaded with Payne's Gray for the two side petals, then load again and tip in Titanium White for the center petal. Add comma stroke tips of French Blue tipped in Titanium White.


Lilies of the Valley
  1. Using a #6 Filbert brush dipped in Titanium White, dab on small lily of the valley flowers.
  2. Add stems, dots and tiny comma strokes of Titanium White.


Completing the Design
  1. Using a #6 Filbert brush, dab on tiny "press/lift" leaves of Green Umber double loaded with Hauser Light Green.
  2. Add liner grass in both Green Umber and Hauser Light Green.
  3. Add several little comma strokes into the grasses of each of the tulip colors.
  4. Apply one coat of water-bases varnish to the entire wooden piece. Allow to dry.
  5. Stain the beveled edge of the wooden heart with a mix if Honeycomb plus Coffee Bean.
  6. When dry, apply a second coat of varnish to the entire piece.
