Project designed by Barbara DiClemente.

Materials:

wine box
blue basecoat paint
gem blue lapis glaze
detail stippler
acrylic paints in raw sienna, French yellow ochre and white
gold powder
gold size
stencil brush
Egyptian Princess stencil
cotton swabs
sea sponge
spatter brush
varnish gloss
soft-release tape

Steps:

  1. Apply two coats of blue base coat, letting each one dry thoroughly.
  2. Apply glaze with the detail stippler. Let dry overnight (figure A).
  3. Using a sea sponge moistened in water, apply thinned-down acrylic paints randomly to get the look of fine veins and pyrite, also called "fool's gold," running through the stone. Let dry overnight.
  4. Position the stencil and tape down, and apply with a mixture of one part gold powder and four parts gold size (figure B).
  5. Stipple in gold to complete it (figure C).
  6. Spatter the rest of the box with gold solution. Let dry overnight.
  7. Paint the inside of the box with the remaining gold paint.
  8. Apply two coats of gloss varnish for protection.
