Suede Finish

Materials:

16 oz. satin acrylic glaze for each color
1/2 cup paint per glaze color
water
stir sticks
one dampened sea sponge per color
cheesecloth, dampened
plastic bowls

Steps:

  1. Paint the wall a neutral base color.
  2. Prior to using, rinse the cheesecloth in plain water, and hang it to dry. Shake it to remove any tiny threads.
  3. Using a separate bowl for each color, combine the glazing liquid and the paint. Add water to thin the mixture to a creamy consistency.
  4. Create patches of the first glaze with a sea sponge. Work in sections. Cover about half of the wall with patches, being careful not to create obvious patterns. Vary the patches in size, shape, and intensity.
  5. With a second sea sponge, apply the second glaze between and around the patches of the first. Let some of the neutral base color show through from behind both.
  6. Rag over the entire area with a barely dampened cheesecloth. Bunch the cloth so that all the ends are tucked in. Lightly touch the surface to remove, or "distress," the glaze. Move the cheesecloth in and out of the patches to produce a variety of shades. To prevent repeating patterns, randomly rotate the cloth after each time it touches the surface. Lightly rework the surface to produce a finer texture. The more the surface is reworked, the more subtle it will be.
Faux Antico Finish

Materials:

1 quart Faux Antico
universal tints: red oxide, brown, and black
plastic container
stirring stick
plastic spatula
wide putty knife
0000 steel wool or 320- to 340-grit sandpaper
soft cloth
optional: clear acrylic finish or car wax

Steps:

  1. Scoop Faux Antico into a plastic container, and add four to five drops of red oxide, three to four drops of brown, and two drops of black universal tint. Stir completely. To adjust the color, add a drop or two of a tint at a time. Faux Antico will dry about two shades darker than it is when it's wet. Faux Antico can be tinted only with universal tints--these are the same tints used to give house paint its color.
  2. Apply one thin layer of Faux Antico to the wall. Spread it out with a plastic spatula, and let it dry for three to four hours.
  3. Lightly sand the layer with steel wool or sandpaper. Dust the surface with a soft cloth.
  4. Apply a second coat, if desired, or a different color and technique. Let dry, then sand.
  5. Clean the surface with a damp cloth, and polish it with a clean spatula. Apply a top coat of clear acrylic finish, or polish with car wax, if desired.
