Figure C
Decorative painter Regina Davidson tells how to use paints and glazes to create a dimensional faux-rock wall.

Materials:

acrylic paint
paintbrushes
glazes
cloth
artists brushes

Steps:

  1. Paint the wall with a base coat that is the color of grout--an off-white or gray.

  2. Prepare three glazes in earth tones such as gray, brown and golden brown (the color of rocks). Use cloth to apply glazes to wall, mixing colors as you go (figure A). Remember, no stone is just one solid color.

  3. With an artists brush, apply highlights across the top of each stone (figure B), and add shadows with darker colors.

  4. Stipple glaze over the grout line so that it looks sandy (figure C).
