Artist Joe Fenzl shares with host Kitty Bartholomew how he created a beautiful antique Old World finish on a new entertainment center using paint, glaze and inexpensive white glue. He says this finish is not like the traditional crackle finish, but instead reflects more of a worn look as if the wood has split and expanded with age. Any color of paint or glaze can be used with this technique; however, you should experiment first in order to achieve your desired effect.

Steps:

  1. Apply an oil or latex base paint to the entire surface and allow to dry (an off-white color was used in this example).
  2. Apply a water-based white glue to the entire surface at full strength and allow to completely dry (figure A). This should take one to two hours.
  3. Dilute milk-based paint to a creamy consistency (figure B) and apply evenly over the entire surface. If the mixture is applied too thick, it may not have a chance to "pull" apart to create the fine lines and splits. Let dry.

  1. Use an oil-based glaze mixture (a raw umber color was used in this example) and apply with a small brush (figure C). Wipe off the excess with a rag (figure D). Let dry overnight.
  2. Use light sandpaper on the entire surface to create a worn, aged look (figure E).
