Felt Topped Ornaments

Materials:

plain glass Christmas balls
red, green and white felt
silver pipe cleaners
small bells (silver, green or red)
pinking shears
Tacky Glue
thin gauge wire
spray paint can lid, empty egg crate or another surface on which balls can rest while they dry

Steps:

1. First decide if you want your ornament to have a felt "collar" or "belt."

2. To create the jester-like collar, simply cut a circle out of red felt, then fold into quarters and snip out the center. Cut one side of the circle open. Wrap felt collar around ornament and cut off excess, so the felt will lay flat (figure A).

3. Cut small triangles out of the felt circle to create a jester's collar (figure B). Attach collar to ornament with glue; don't worry about attaching each tip of the collar, leave these loose.

4. To create a "belt," cut a one-inch wide strip of green felt with pinking shears. Make sure that the belt is long enough to wrap around the widest part of the Christmas ball. Glue it around the center of the ball, ensuring that the ends meet perfectly and the seam isn't obvious (figure C). Don't overlap the ends as it will cause a bump.

5. Next, cut a one-half-inch wide strip from the white felt with pinking shears. Glue this strip onto the green felt band (figure D). Allow glue to dry.

6. Embellish each style of the felt-topped ornaments by creating decorative silver loop tops for each style of bulb using silver pipe cleaners. Create four large loops out of pipe cleaners, leaving an end free which will later be used to attach silver top to Christmas ball (figure E). Depending on the length of pipe cleaner, this step may require two pipe cleaners.

7. Cut two leaves, which are joined in the middle, out of the dark green felt. Run a small piece of wire through small silver jingle bells and wire the bells onto the green felt leaves.

8. Finally, secure the silver loop toppers to the Christmas balls by feeding the loose ends of the silver pipe cleaners through the Christmas balls' hangers and twisting. On top of this, wire on the felt leaves and bells.
