Candy Train Treats Angela Kouroyen from Derry, N.H., called in to share an idea for a sweet treat that 's perfect to hand out to neighborhood children during the holiday season. Angela makes choo-choo train engines (figure A) using packaged candy. She hot glues a roll of Lifesavers to a pack of chewing gum, then glues peppermint hard candies on as wheels and a snack -size candy bar bite as the engineer's cabin. She tops it off with a Hershey's Kiss "smokestack" for an adorable treat that's good any time of the year.
Ice Cream Ornaments
Caller Sue Deloria from Newberry, Mich., makes ornaments using glass balls and ice cream cones (figure B). Sue uses white glue to adhere the ball ornaments to an ice cream cone, then covers the ball with glue rolls it in colorful sprinkle candies for delicious-looking results.
Pine Cone and Popcorn Ornaments
Return caller Rogene Fischer phones in more ideas for glass ball ornaments. Rogene stuffs the inside of glass ornaments with unexpected items that beg the question, "How'd you do that?!?"
For instance, Rogene soaks small pine cones in water until they're pliable, then slips them though the top of the ornament with a sprig of pine from the tree (figure C). She finishes by adding some white flakes inside the ornament and a raffia tie to the outside to top it off.
Next, learn about the popcorn ornament (figure D). To make this ornament, remove the cap from a clear glass ball ornament, add in a teaspoon or so of unpopped popcorn, place the ball without the cap in a small paper bag, then pop it in the microwave for a minute or so until the corn pops. Microwave times will vary with different ovens and ornament sizes so experiment until you find the right formula.
