Glass-etched designs can be accomplished in many different ways and, fortunately, you don't have to be a masterful artist to participate in this wonderful craft. Inexpensive glass plates, glass etching cream and easy designs can help you to create some special holiday magic for your family and friends.
Christmas stencils are available in all shapes and sizes, and are made from a variety of materials. If you're not artistically inclined, stamp out a design using rubber stamps and Con-Tact paper as your canvas. Cut a generous border around the stamped outline, adhere the Con-Tact paper cutout to a glass surface or ceramic surface, and use a craft knife to trim out the design. For those looking for an even easier method, try peel-and-stick or rub-on transfer designs, especially made for glass etching and painting. I discovered a beautiful new poinsettia design, just in time for the holidays, in the Peel 'n' Etch line from Armour Products.
Please Note: When painting or stamping glass with permanent ink or ceramic enamel paint, keep a bottle of solvent-based cleaner handy to quickly tidy-up mistakes and mishaps.
Materials:
transparent glass plate with no design
Peel 'n' Etch stencil - poinsettia design
Armour Etch glass etching cream
Pebeo Porcelaine 150 paint - red, yellow, green
paint brushes
craft knife
box tape
disposable latex gloves
Steps:
- Thoroughly clean the glass to be etched.
- Center the poinsettia design on the top (eating surface) of the plate. Carefully remove the stencil from the protective backing and adhere the design to the plate (figure A). Note: Although the plate in this project was etched on the eating surface, the manufacturer of Armour Etch strongly recommends that all glass etching be done on the outside of eating/drinking areas.
- Use a craft knife to remove pieces of the stencil, exposing the glass in the sections where the etching will be done.
- Protect any exposed glass along the outside edges of the stencils by covering them completely with box tape. Note: Armour Etch begins to etch glass immediately on contact and can make clear glass appear cloudy within minutes. It is important to tape off the sections of glass that you wish to remain clear.
- Spread the etching cream over the design. Allow the cream to carve in the design for three to four minutes. Do not leave the cream on the glass for more than five minutes because it will begin to eat through the stencil and etch in covered areas.
- After three or four minutes, use a brush and warm water to push the residual cream off the plate. Wash and rinse thoroughly, removing any remaining tape or stencil. The etched design will not become apparent until the plate dries.
- Paint the poinsettia design on the underside of the plate using the red, yellow, and green Porcelaine paint.
