Ribbon Applique
Materials:

shaded green ribbon
red
silk thread
appliqué needles
Sakura pigment pen
sequins pins
quilter's batting
ultra suede

Steps:

1. Lay the green shaded ribbon on the pattern and trace the body design using a Sakura pigment pen. If you can't see through the ribbon, photocopy the pattern and create cut-outs of the shapes. Placement of the design on the ribbon is important to consider. The back of the head, wings and body are dark green while the underside of the wings and belly are light green.

2. Reverse appliqué the throat section using small sequin pins to hold the fabric in place.

3. Appliqué one side if the body, head and wing to the fabric, leaving a large portion of the stomach unattached for stuffing. Do not trim away the excess ribbon until you are ready to sew. Tuck the fabric edge under with the needle to make sure the tracing marks aren't visible. Tip: Make small placement marks along the body to help line up the wings correctly.

4. Cut a small section of thin batting (quilter's batting split in half) to fit the body and insert the stuffing through the opening of the belly.

5. Match the feather colors with the body, using lighter shades for the undersides of the wings. Using a chenille needle, anchor the ribbon in place. First, thread the needle with the ribbon through the eye. Then, push the needle through the center of the ribbon at one end, and pull the ribbon tail over the needle to make a knot. Use the pigment pen to mark the feather stitches. Space the dots further apart along the outer edge. Tip: For a white belly on a white background, backstitch black ribbon underneath the body for definition.

6. Use a simple overstitch for the feathers. Stitch up through the fabric, starting at the top of the wing to the outer edge. Lay the ribbon over the second dot and push the needle through the center of the ribbon over the mark to create a small curl.

7. Use ultra suede for the beak and eyes. Color in the eyes with black pigment pen, and stitch to the head using gray thread.
