Figure A
Master ribboneur Mary Jo Hiney drops by to introduce some of the designs from her book, Victorian Ribbon and Lacecraft Design. For Carol, Mary Jo submits the step-by-step for an aesthetic, ribbon-laced wall hanging, details of which are presented in the book.

Materials:

pattern from Victorian Ribbon and Lacecraft Design *
corresponding ribbons
large eye needle
material, type and pattern as desired
batting
fabric backing
lace and buttons for decoration
cardboard or mat board
paper to make the pattern if you are designing your own

* A ribbon design kit may also be used, or you may prefer to draw your own pattern on a piece of paper.

Steps:
  1. Determine the frame size you want to work with, and decide where the photo will be placed. Cut a mat/cardboard to the proper size for the photo and frame.
  2. Cut batting to the outside dimensions of the cardboard, and cut the backing fabric 3/4 inch larger all the way around.
  3. On another piece of paper, make a basic outline of what you want to do and transfer the design to the fabric you want to work with.
  4. To do the ribbon stitch, hold the ribbon straight up. Coil the ribbon until it's about ready to buckle. Insert the needle where you want the stitch to be (figure A).
  5. When the ribbon embroidery is done, decorate the pattern with lace and buttons as desired. Finish by framing the pattern.
