Carol exhibits a myriad of ribbons, ranging from satins and grosgrains, to metallic and printed. To locate a variety of ribbons suitable for gracing cushions and pillows like those featured on this segment, Carol recommends searching in your local fabric, sewing, craft, discount, department, and specialty stores.
Materials:
pillow
assorted ribbon pieces at least as long as the width of the pillow
Wonder Under, Heat 'N' Bond or pins
needle and thread
Steps for Pillows:
- Turn the ribbon over so that its underside faces you.
- With the length of ribbon lying perpendicular to the edge of the pillow, sew about 1/4 inch of one end of the ribbon onto the edge of the pillow.
- Bring the rest of the ribbon over the sewn area and toward the middle of the pillow so that its topside faces you.
- Repeating Steps 1-3, attach a ribbon onto the opposite edge of the pillow.
- Tie the two pieces of ribbon together where they meet in the middle of the pillow.
- Repeat Steps 1-5 until you have as many ribbons on your pillow as you like.
Steps for Cushions:
Pin or use iron-on adhesive to hold ribbons in place as you weave them over the cover of the cushion. Using fusible webbing is a good idea because then you can iron the cushion cover as you go, holding the weaved portions in place.
There is also a self-sticking sheet available from Stitch Witchery that has a gird already drawn on it, making it easier to keep the strips in place while you are weaving. You can put a braided ribbon at the edge to finish off the cushion. The trick in braiding the ribbon is to make sure the ribbons used in the braid remain flat.
