Project demonstrated by Marie Clapper.

Materials:

kitchen shears
plastic bottles
yarn
paper hole punch or a nail
large-eye needle
paper

Steps:

  1. Make a paper pattern measuring 3" square. Using the pattern, cut 10 squares of plastic for the sides and bottom of the bag.
  2. Cut the paper pattern in half diagonally. Use one of the paper triangles to cut 48 triangles of plastic.
  3. Punch holes around the perimeter of all of the plastic squares and triangles. Use yarn to blanket stitch the pieces together, first stitching the triangles back into squares. Sew three rows of four assembled squares together to form the front of the bag. Repeat for the back of the bag.
  4. Sew the ten squares together in a strip formation to make the sides and bottom of the bag. Connect this strip to the edges of the front and back panels of the bag using a blanket stitch. Blanket stitch around the top edge of the bag.
  5. Cut a 1-1/2" x 12" strip of plastic to create a handle. Punch holes in the ends of the handle strip and stitch it to the inside of the front and back panels. Lining is unnecessary since the plastic is waterproof and openings allow ventilation.
