Project and line art designed by Judith Baker-Montano

Materials:

"S" hoop
tight weave material
4mm silk ribbon: lavender, cream, coral, green
chenille needles
scissors
air-soluble markers

Steps:

  1. See figure A to determine where to place stitches. To make a guide on fabric, copy the illustration onto fabric using air-soluble markers.
  2. Place tight-weave material in "S" hoop.
  3. Make iris and forget-me-not leaves using the Japanese ribbon stitch (figure B). The ribbon stitch is used to make green leaves in this design. Pull ribbon from back through to front of fabric (figure B point 1). Making sure the ribbon lies flat on the fabric, pierce the top center of the ribbon 1" up from point 1. Gently pull the needle through to the back. The ribbon edges will curl at the tip. Don't pull the ribbon too tightly or the effect will be lost. Vary the size of the leaves by adjusting the length and tension of the ribbon before piercing with the needle.
  4. Use the decorated lazy daisy stitch (figure C) to create the lavender color iris petals. The lazy daisy stitch is a free-floating chain stitch. Come up at figure C point 1 and form a loop. Go down at point 2, as close to point 1 as possible without going into it, and emerge at point 3, bringing the needle tip over the thread. Go down at point 4, making a small anchor stitch.
  5. Use coral ribbon and the French knot technique (figure D) to create the forget-me-not flowers. Come up at figure D point 1 and wrap the thread twice around the needle. While holding the thread taut, go down at point 2, as close to point 1 as possible without going through it. Hold the knot in place until the needle is completely through the fabric.
  6. Use a twisted ribbon stem stitch to create the iris stems. With the same ribbon used for the leaves, come up through the fabric and twist the ribbon. Go down at the intended length of the stem and pull firmly in place. Untwist and continue on.
