Caron Wintuk 4, Art. 1244 (3 1/2 oz. skein), a yarn made of 100% Monsanto Acrylic Fiber
8 skeins #43 Navy Blue
5 skeins #1 White
4 skeins #148 Deep Crimson
Crochet hook, size G, or size required to crochet to gauge

Size: About 35" X 65".

Gauge: 4 sc = 1".

Block: Make 12. With Navy Blue, ch 35.

Row 1 (Right Side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across-34 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
Rows 3 through 37: Repeat Row 2. At end of last row, do not cut yarn.

Block Border:
Rnd 1: Right side facing, turn Block to work across side (row end) edge, * 3sc in corner, work 36 sc evenly spaced to next corner, 3 sc in corner, continuing across next edge work 32 sc to next corner; repeat from * once more, join with sl st to first sc. Cut yarn.

Block Assembly:
NOTES: Side of Block each have 36 sc, plus corners; top and bottom of Block each have 32 sc, plus corners. All Blocks are joined by Stripe Borders that are crocheted into position. Side edges will be joined first; these Stripe Borders begin at bottom corners and work to top corners. When positioning Blocks, take care that all face the same direction. In all instances, Block on left-hand side is referred to as Block 2; Block on right-hand side is Block 1. When changing colors, always drop unused color to wrong side of work to pick up when again needed.

Stripe Border (Joining 2 Blocks):
Row 1: Right side facing, with two Blocks turned to work across sides, join Deep Crimson in corner sc at bottom of Block 2, ch 12, draw up a loop in last ch and remove hook; on Block 1, insert hook in center sc of bottom corner, pick up dropped loop, draw through and tighten, sl st in same corner on Block 1, sl st in next sc on Border, turn and sc in 11 ch, draw up a loop in next ch, with White, work yo and through both loops on hook (color change completed). With White, sl st in next 2 sc on Block Border. Turn.
Row 2: With White, sc 12 sc of Stripe Border, sl st in next 2 sc of Block Border. Turn.
Row 3: With White, sc in each sc across and change to Deep Crimson on last yo. With Deep Crimson, sl st in next 2 sc on Block Border. Turn.
Row 4: With Deep Crimson, repeat Row 2.
Row 5: With Deep Crimson, repeat Row 3 and change to White on last yo.
Rows 6 through 40: Repeat Rows 2 through 5, ending one row Deep Crimson. At end of last row, sl st in corner sc of Block. Working in the same manner as first joining, join another Block to form a strip of 3 Blocks.

Stripe Border (Outside Edge of Block):
Row 1: Right side facing, with Block turned to work across outside (Navy Blue) edge, join Deep Crimson in center sc of lower corner, ch 13, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, change to White on last yo. With White, sl st in next 2 sc of Block Border. Turn.
Row 2: Continuing across Striped Border, with White, sc in 12 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc in 12 sc and change to Deep Crimson on last yo. With Deep Crimson, sl st in next 2 sc on Block Border. Turn.
Row 4: With Deep Crimson, repeat Row 2.
Row 5: With Deep Crimson, repeat Row 3 and change to White on last yo.
Row 6 through 40: Repeat Rows 2 through 5, end with one row Deep Crimson. When last row is complete, sl st in corner-1 strip completed. Fasten off. Make 3 more strips in the same manner as first strip.

Horizontal Stripe Border (Joining Strips):
Row 1: Position 2 strips side by side with wrong side down. Working in same manner as previous Stripe Borders, join Deep Crimson with sl st in center st of corner of strip, ch 12, join in corresponding corner of next strip, sl st in next sc of Block, sc across ch and change to White on last yo. Working in same manner that Blocks were joined, continue to work Stripe Pattern until 2 strips are joined. Join remaining 2 strips to first strips in the same manner-3 X 4 Blocks joined with Stripe Borders. On outside edges (Navy Blue), work Outside Stripe Border as before.

Border:
Rnd 1: Right side facing, with afghan turned to work across long edge, join Navy Blue in corner, * work 3 sc in corner, ** 12 sc evenly spaced across short stripe edge, 40 sc evenly spaced across long stripe edge; repeat from ** to as established to corner; repeat from * around as established, join with sl st to first sc.
Rnd 2: Ch 4 for first tr, tr in next sc, * 3 tr in center sc of corner, tr in each sc to next corner; repeat from * around, join with sl st to top of starting ch-4.
Rnds 3 and 4: Sc in each sc around, work 3 sc in each corner; at end of rnd, join. At end of last rnd, fasten off.

Star: Make 6.
First Point: With White, ch 10.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across-9 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Skip first sc, sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in last sc-9 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Work 2 sc in first sc, sc in 6 sc, skip 1 sc, sc in last sc-9 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Rows 4 through 9: Repeat Rows 2 and 3. At end of last row, do not turn.

Second Point:
Row 1: Ch 1, sc in side of 9 rows of First Point, turn.
Rows 2 through 9: Work same as First Point.
Third Point through Fifth Point: Make same as Second Point. At end of last row, fasten off. Sew two edges together to form 5-pointed star.

Finishing:
Center Stars, checkerboard style, on Navy Squares; there will be two Stars at top narrow edge and one Star at bottom narrow edge. Sew stars in place.
