No-Sew Woven Table Runner

Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-548 -- More Projects »
Finished dimensions: 50" x 13 1/2"

Materials
1/2 yard Kafio felt in Wine color
1/4 yard Kafio felt in Loden color, cut in 1-1/2" wide strips
6 yards of 1-1/2" wide Offray Cori ribbon in Icy Mint color
fusible tape or fabric glue
scissors
rotary cutter
tape measure
straight-edge for cutting 1-1/2" wide strips
fabric marker
iron

Steps
  1. Cut Wine-colored Kafio into a 46-1/2" x 13-1/2" rectangle for the base.
  2. Cut Loden-colored Kafio into three strips, each 1-1/2" x 54".
  3. Cut the ribbon into four lengths, each 54" long.
  4. Working from the wrong side of the Wine Kafio base, draw a line around the four sides measuring 1-1/2" inside each cut edge.
  5. Mark every 1-1/2" along both long sides and connect the marks until the full length is filled in with width-wise slits.
Note: Disappearing marker is not needed because the marks are made on the underside of the fabric.
TIP: Use tape measure to mark off increments--a grid ruler tends to add slight increases to each increment and will come out uneven.
  6. Using a rotary cutter and straight-edge, cut each short mark almost to the lengthwise lines. Use scissors to complete each cut and end just on the line.
TIP: Try to cut as straight and accurately as possible, the cut lines need to be clean and smooth.
  7. Basket-weave one length of ribbon through each cut slit. Insert ribbon under the outside edge and up through the first slit.
  8. Continue weaving over and under slits to the opposite end.
  9. Continue weaving with contrasting Kafio strip, alternating the ribbon and Kafio until slits are completely filled with four ribbons and three Kafio strips.
TIP: Begin by inserting first ribbon under the outside edge and out the first slit. Once finished, this controls the ribbon ends and borders the runner completely with Kafio. Slide each ribbon and strip as tightly together as possible, otherwise they all won't fit without causing the ribbon to buckle. Use a bodkin or large safety pin to weave if desired.
  10. Cut 1" lengths of fusible tape. Working from the wrong side, apply the tape according to the manufacturer's directions to bond the ribbon and strip ends to the short side of the base.
TIP: After one end is fused, check the middle and adjust the weaving so that each ribbon and strip are close together, smooth and straight.
  11. When the center is completely smooth, fuse the opposite end. Each end could be pinned in place and transferred to the ironing board for fusing, but don't leave the pins in overnight, as this tends to leave pin marks.
  12. Trim the ends as desired. The featured table runner ends were cut even at 1-1/2" from the edge of the Kafio base. The ends were trimmed diagonally, cutting the top corner off of each ribbon and Kafio strip.
Note: The ends may also be cut blunt, in points or varying ribbon ends from Kafio ends.
