Figure B
Project demonstrated by Suzanne McNeill.

Materials:

foam piercing pad
fine and coarse piercing tools
metallic and colored thread
thin sewing needle
colored card stock or cards

Steps:

1. Cut out or photocopy the desired pattern. Attach it to an open card with masking tape that has been pressed on fabric to the reduce stickiness and prevent damage to card.

2. Place the card on the piercing pad. Pierce the card with a fine tool, holding the tool vertically (figure A). Check the pattern against a light source for any un-pierced holes. Remove the pattern.

3. Select and cut 36 inches of thread. Double it and thread it onto a needle.

4. Insert the needle from the back of the card leaving a 1-1/2-inch tail. Secure the tail with tape outside the pierced holes. Weave the thread across the center of the pattern, working to and from opposite holes (figure B). When ending the thread, secure in the same manner.

5. Glue coordinating card stock on the back of the design to hide the stitching.

Tips:

  • The needle should always be thinner than the piercing tool. Check by inserting needle in the tool packaging or in a pierced hole.
  • Dip the end of a thread in glue to prevent fraying. Allow to dry.
  • Insert the needle in one hole at a time to prevent tears.
