Jill Sutton Filo, historian and author of Roly Poly Circus Quilt, discusses the early influences of Ruby Short McKim author of the first published collection of quilt patterns, and explains different methods to re-create Ruby's whimsical patterns of the Roly Poly Circus pattern. She then shows how to create a Roly-Poly circus block design.

Materials:

light colored fabric
embroidery thread (turkey red is the traditional color used for red work embroidery)
embroidery needle
embroidery hoop
scissors
Roly Poly Circus Quilt book
mechanical pencil
masking tape

Steps:

1. Measure and cut the light colored fabric into a square. Fold the square into quarters and finger press the folds.

2. Place the fabric over the pattern, line up the design with the center of the fabric, and tape the fabric in place. Trace the pattern to the fabric with a mechanical pencil just dark enough to see the lines.

3. There are two stitches that may be used for red work embroidery: the running stitch and the traditional stem stitch. The running stitch is a dotted line, and the stem stitch is a solid line.

4. Once the design is traced to the fabric, secure the fabric square in an embroidery hoop and use the embroidery needle and red thread to fill in the pattern along the lines.

The following are modern methods to applying the red work embroidery using a different technique:

1. Machine appliqué animal print fabric cut to the pattern dimensions. Use a fusible web to bond the fabric to the foundation piece. Use the satin stitch setting to appliqué the design.

2. For a simple outline, machine appliqué the pattern to the foundation without the appliquéd fabric.

3. To create this fun look for kids, trace the pattern on the fabric with a permanent marker. Tape the fabric to cardboard or a hard work surface and color in the design with crayons. Turn the fabric right-side down on paper towels and heat set the crayon to the fabric with an iron.
