Strip Hat

Materials:

Lion Brand Jiffy Chunky, Art. 470 (3 oz. skein), a yarn made of 100% Monsanto Acrylic Fiber
1 skein #112 Red
1 skein #100 White
1 skein #153 Black
Crochet hook, size H and I, or size required to crochet to gauge

Size: Directions are given for 6 month size. Changes for 12 month, 18 month, and 24 month sizes are given in parentheses.

Gauge: 3 sc = 1" (size I hook)

Hat:
With I hook and Black, ch 56 (60-64-66).
Row 1 (Right Side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across-55 (59-63-65) sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc in each sc across. Drop Black to wrong side of work.
Row 3: Join White, sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 4: With White, sc in each sc across. Drop White to wrong side of work; pick up Black and ch 1, turn.
Rows 5 and 6: With Black, repeat Rows 3 and 4. At end of last row, pick up White and turn. Repeat Rows 3 through 6 for Stripe Pattern until 3 *" (3 *"-4"-4") from beg.
Next row (Dec Row): Keeping to Stripe Pattern as established, * sc in 2 sc, draw up a loop in each of next 2 sc, yo and through 3 loops on hook (1 sc dec); repeat from * across-42 (45-48-49) sc. Ch 1, turn.
Next Row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 1 (Right Side): Turn to starting sc (bottom) edge. Right side facing, with H hook, join Red in first st, ch 3 for first dc, work 53 (57-61-63) dc evenly spaced across other side of starting ch-54 (58-62-63) dc counting starting ch. Turn.
Row 2: Sl st in first dc, ch 3 for first dc, * yo and insert hook from front to back to front around post of next dc directly below, complete as dc (front post dc completed), yo and insert hook from back to front to back around post of next dc, complete as dc (back post dc completed); repeat from * across, end dc in last st. Turn.
Row 3: Sl st in first dc, ch 3 for first dc, * front post dc around first post dc, back post dc around next post dc; repeat from * across, end hdc in last st. Fasten off.

Finishing:
Sew back seam of Hat. Draw top stitches together and secure.
Pom-pom: Wrap Red around 1 *" cardboard about 50 times. Tie one end securely; cut opposite end.
Clip Pom-pom evenly and sew to center top of Hat.

Mittens

Materials:

Gauge: 3 sc = 1" (size I hook).

Mitten Top:
Make 2. With I hook and White, ch 9 (10-10-11).
Row 1 (Right Side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across-8 (9-9-10) sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat Row 2 until 3" (3"-3 *"-3 *") from beg.
Next Row (Dec Row): Sc in first sc, * draw up a loop in each of next 2 sc, yo and through 3 loops on hook (1 sc dec, sc in next sc; repeat from * across-6 (6-6-7) sc. Ch 1, turn.

Mitten Palm:
Make 2. With Red, make same as Mitten Top.

Finishing:
Wrong sides together, holding one Mitten Top and Mitten Palm together, with Mitten top facing you, using H hook, join Black and sc 2 pieces together across sides and top; do not close bottom. Cut yarn.

Ribbing: Row 1 (Right Side): Turn to starting ch (wrist) edge. Right side facing, with H hook, join Red in side seam st, ch 3 for first dc, work 15 (17-17-19) dc evenly spaced across wrist edge-16 (18-18-20) dc counting starting ch-3. Turn.
Row 2: Sl st in first dc, ch 3 for first dc, * yo and insert hook from front to back to front around post of next dc directly below, complete as dc (front post dc completed), yo and insert hook from back to front to back around post of next dc, complete as dc (back post dc completed); repeat from * across, end dc in last st.
Row 3: Sl st in first dc, ch 3 for first dc, * front post dc around first post dc, back post dc around next post dc; repeat from * across, end hdc in last st. Fasten off.

Finishing:
Sew side seam of wrist ribbing.
Eyes: Make 2. With H hook and Black, ch 4 and join with sl st to form a ring. Work 8 sc in ring, join with sl st to first sc.
Fasten off.
Ears: Make 2. With H hook and Black, ch 5. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, in next ch work hdc and dc, in next ch work dc and hdc, sc in last ch. Fasten off. On top of Mitten (White area), center the two ears and sew in place (angled slightly, with center of each ear 2 rows below Red Ribbing). Center and sew eyes in place below ears. If desired, sew a black button very securely to center of each eye. (If buttons are used, take care that youngsters cannot chew them off.)
Nose: Thread large-eye yarn needle with a single strand Black. On first row of Nose (center of Mitten, 2 rows below Eyes), work a single cross stitch; on next row work another cross stitch directly under first, then work one on each side (3 cross stitches on second row).
Mouth: With Red, embroider straight stitches from center of nose to bottom side edge of Mitten.

Panda Sweater

Gauge: 3 sc = 1" (size I hook).

Back:
Beg at bottom, with Red and I hook, ch 31 (34-37-40).
Row 1 (Right Side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across-30 (33-36-39) sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat Row 2 until 5" (5 *"-6"-7") from beg, or 1" less than desired length to underarm. At end of last row, do not ch 1. Turn.
Shape Armhole: Sl st in 2 sc, sc in each sc to last 2 sts; leave last 2 sts unworked-26 (29-32-35) sc. Ch 1, turn.
Continue in sc as established until 4" (4 *"-5"-5 *") above beg of armhole shaping. Fasten off.
Bottom Ribbing Row 1: Turn to starting ch edge. Right side facing, with H hook, join Red in first st, ch 3 for first dc, work 29 (31-35-37) dc evenly spaced across-30 (32-36-38) dc counting starting ch-3.
Row 2: Sl st in first dc, ch 2 for first hdc, * yo and insert hook from front to back to front around post of next dc directly below, complete as dc (front post dc completed), yo and insert hook from back to front to back around post of next dc, complete as dc (back post dc completed); repeat from * to last st, hdc in last st. Turn.
Row 3: Sl st in first hdc, ch 2 for first hdc, * front post dc around first post dc, back post dc around next post dc; repeat from * across, end hdc in last st. Fasten off.

Front:
Make same as Back until 3" (3 *"-4"-4 *") above beg of armhole shaping.
Shape Neck: Sc in 7 (8-9-10) sts; leave remainder of row unworked. Ch 1, turn.
Next Row: Draw up a loop in each of first 2 sc, yo and through 3 loops on hook (1 sc dec at neck edge), sc across-6 (7-8-9) sc. Ch 1, turn. Work even in sc on 6 (7-8-9) sts until same length as back. Fasten off. Return to last long row worked, skip center 12 (13-14-15) sts for neck, join Red with sc in next st, dec 1 sc, sc across. Work to correspond to first side.
Ribbing: Work same as Back.

Sleeves:
With I hook and Black, ch 25 (28-31-34)
Row 1 (Right Side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across-24 (27-30-33) sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc in each sc across. Drop Black to wrong side of work. Turn.
Row 3: Join White, sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 4: Sc in each sc across. Drop White to wrong side of work. Turn.
Rows 5 and 6: Pick up Black and repeat Rows 3 and 4. Repeat Rows 3 through 6 until 6 *" (7"-7 *"-8) from beg. At end of last row, fasten off.

Ribbing: Turn sleeve to work across starting ch edge. Right side facing, with H hook, join Red and ch 3 for first dc, work 23 (25-29-31) dc evenly spaced across-24 (26-30-32) dc counting starting ch. Work in ribbing same as back for 2 rows more.

Finishing:
Sew shoulder seams. Sew sleeves in place; sew underarm and side seams.
Neck Ribbing: Rnd 1; Right side facing, with garment turned to work across back neck, with H hook, join Red in shoulde seam, ch 3 for first dc, work 13 (14-15-16) dc across back neck, dc in seam, work 6 dc evenly spaced across side neck, work 12 (13-14-15) dc across front neck, work 6 dc evenly spaced across side neck, join with sl st to top of starting ch-3-39 (41-43-45) dc counting starting ch-3.
Rnds 2 and 3: Working on an uneven number of sts, work around neck in ribbing same as Back. At end of each rnd, join; at end of last rnd, fasten off.
Panda Face: With I hook and White, ch 4 and join with sl st to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 8 sc in ring, join with sl st to first sc.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, work 2 sc in each sc around, join-16 sc.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, * sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around, join-24 sc.
Rnd 4: Ch 1, * sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around, join-32 sc.
Rnd 5: Ch 1, * sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around, join-40 sc.

Second Ear: Join Black 2 sc before next inc; work same as First Ear.
Eye: Make 2. With H hook and Black, repeat Panda Face, Rnds 1 and 2. Fasten off.
Nose: With I hook and Black, ch 5.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across-4 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: (Dec 1 sc) 2 times. Ch 1, turn.
Row 4: Dec 1 sc. Fasten off. Sew Nose to center of face over starting ch. Center and sew eyes just above nose. If desired, sew black button very securely to center of each eye. (If there is a danger of child chewing buttons off, eliminate buttons.)
Mouth: Using large-eye yarn needle and a single strand Red, work straight stitch for mouth (see photograph). Sew Panda Face to center front of garment.

Stripe Pants

Leg:
Make 2. Beg at bottom of Leg, with I hook and Black, ch 41 (43-46-49).
Row 1 (Right Side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across-40 (42-45-48) sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc in each sc across. Drop Black to wrong side of work.
Row 3: Join White, sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 4: With White, sc in each sc across. Drop White to wrong side of work, pick up Black and ch 1, turn.
Rows 5 and 6: With Black, repeat Rows 3 and 4. At end of last row, pick up White and turn. Repeat Rows 3 through 6 for Stripe Pattern until 6" (6 *"-7-7 *") from beg. At end of last row, do not ch 1. Turn.
Shape Crotch: Keeping to Stripe Pattern as established, sl st in 3 sc, sc in each sc across to last 3 sc; leave last 3 sc unworked-34 (36-39-42) sc. Turn. Keeping to Stripe Pattern, work even in sc until 6 *" (7'-7 *"-8") above beg of crotch shaping. At end of last row, fasten off.
Casing: Row 1: Join Red, sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn.
Rows 2 through 4: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. At end of last row, do not ch 1. Fasten off.
Bottom Ribbing: Row 1 (Right Side): Turn to starting ch (bottom) edge. Right side facing, with H hook, join Red in first st, ch 3 for first dc, work 33 (35-39-41) dc evenly spaced across-34 (36-40-42) dc counting starting ch.
Row 2: Sl st in first dc, ch 3 for first dc, * yo and insert hook from front to back to front around post of next dc directly below, complete as dc (front post dc completed), yo and insert hook from back to front to back around post of next dc, complete as dc (back post dc completed); repeat from * across, end dc in last st.
Row 3: Sl st in first dc, ch 3 for first dc, * front post dc around first post dc, back post dc around next post dc; repeat from * across, end hdc in last st. Fasten off.

Finishing:
Sew front and back seam from waist to crotch.
Sew inner leg seams. Turn Red at waist to inside and sew in place leaving a 2" opening. Insert elastic and adjust to fit; sew ends of elastic. Sew remainder of waist closed.
