Suzanne McNeill of Design Originals demonstrates how to crochet a simple yo-yo or make one from fabric. Several yo-yos can be used to make a necklace, or can serve as the decoration on a design project.

Materials:

piece of cloth
needle and strong thread*

* Button thread is a good choice since it has a finish which prevents tangling and knotting when hand sewing. It is exceptionally strong so that you can pull the gathers tight without the thread breaking. Dental floss is a good choice, too, because it's strong, but is sometimes difficult to work with.

Steps:
  1. Cut out circles from cloth. The size of the circle will determine the size of the yo-yo.
  2. Turn under raw edge of circle 1/4 inch, taking small running stitches all the way around.
  3. Pull the thread to gather the yo-yo into a tight circle, with the right side of the fabric facing out. Secure the end of the thread to hold the gathers in place.
