Denise Simons from Denise Simons Interiors shows how to create framed art using decorative tiles. This charming and functional piece of art is a portable backsplash to be used behind a kitchen stove, countertop or in a bathroom.

Materials:

backer board available from home improvement stores
stone tile with paper mesh backing
utility knife
tile adhesive
trowel with notched edges
grout
float available from home improvement stores
sponge
water
frame

Steps:

  1. Decide on a tile design then have the backer board cut to size.

  2. Choose a center accent tile and center it on the backer board.

Figure A
  • Place mesh stone sheet around the center tile to determine the sizes needed. Turn the mesh over and use a utility knife to cut the mesh to size (figure A). After cutting all the pieces set them aside.

    Figure B
  • Using a trowel, apply a 1/4-inch layer of tile adhesive to the backer board (figure B).

    Figure C
  • Starting with the center tile, position all the pieces on the layer of tile adhesive. Push them tightly together and to the adhesive (figure C). You should be able to move the pieces around in the adhesive for a while, so there's time to get them in the correct position.

  • Let the adhesive cure for at least 24 hours.

  • Mask off any decorative tiles to avoid getting grout on them.

    Figure D
  • Apply pre-mixed grout to the tile design using a float (figure D).

    Figure E
  • Immediately after grouting, use a wet sponge to wipe away the excess from the tiles (figure E). This usually takes quite a few strokes to remove all of the excess. Rinse and dampen the sponge often while doing this. Let grout set.

  • Frame the tiled backer board. Seal the project with clear acrylic sealant if desired.
