Project designed by Linda Ragsdale.
Materials:
Rows Bowl from Mixed Nuts
8 red and or pink tin soda cans, 8 green soda cans
Quick Grab glue
needle nose and flat nose pliers
18- or 20-gauge wire in green or aqua - cut three 12" rose stems and five 15" vine stems
rough sand paper
four small, five medium and six large ivy leaves to use as a pattern
Steps:
- Cut the top and bottom off of red or pink tin can and discard. Open up the can and flatten out the tin. To create rose "petals," cut the following shapes from the red or pink tin - one elongated heart shape with bottom cut off, three small hearts, two medium hearts, three large hearts. Make the hearts approximately 1/4" different in height, depending on the size of the blooms.
- Cut the top and bottom off of the green cans and discard. Open up the can and flatten out the tin. To make ivy leaves, position pattern leaves on green tin. Trace perimeter shape of pattern leaves onto tin using a pencil or stylus. Each leaf should have five points and a rounded bottom. Cut out each tin leaf. For shaping, fold each leaf in half at the center and then in between each of the points. Accent the tin leaves by using the rough sandpaper to brush off some of the color moving from the center outward.
- Make large set of loops at the top of a 12" strip of green or aqua wire. With needle nose pliers, form the center of the rose by rolling rounded top inward, color to the outside. Pinch ends tightly. Add a drop of glue to the loop end of the wire, and feed through the top of the center of the rose and let dry.
- Separate the pieces made above in preparation to make one large- and two medium-sized roses. For the large-sized rose sort out three small hearts, two medium hearts, two large hearts, a center and two leaves in a pile. For the first medium-sized rose, sort out one leaf, three small hearts, two medium hearts and a center. For the second medium-sized rose, sort out two leaves, three small hearts, two medium hearts and a center.
Fold and bend the small hearts to place around the center. Glue one at a time, shaping to create a full rose. Add a third large petal to create a size difference.
- Bind roses and ivy leaves together by winding the wire around the outer rings of the rose bowl. Make a small loop and squeeze flat. Space loops to accommodate leaves and wrapping. Place a small amount of glue onto the loops, and place on back end of leaf.
- Make corner guards for the bowl by cutting random shapes of tin to fold over edges of bowl. Add miscellaneous curls of wire for added appeal. Curl around a pencil or shape of desired thickness.
