Guest Lynne Farris demonstrates how to make this sweet book of a child's most familiar faces.

Materials:

2 sheets 8-1/2" x 11" inkjet printable fabric
4" x 8" pieces of quilt batting
computer with inkjet printer
coordinating threads
sewing machine
iron
air-soluble marker

Steps:

1. Choose images and retrieve from computer scanner, digital camera or e-mail function. Format using the greeting card template of a graphics program. We used the quarter-fold horizontal right-opening version, but you might choose whichever format best fits your art or photographs.

2. Select images for cover, back cover, front inside and back inside covers. Follow your software's instructions to center images in each segment of the template. Print out a test sheet on plain paper to check for proper placement before you print on the fabric sheets. Mark seam allowances as shown and check alignment again. When satisfied with your composition, print in color on a fabric sheet. Repeat this process with four more images for interior pages (figure A).

3. Fold up a 1/4-inch seam allowance along the long sides of the sheet and press. Fold the sheet in half lengthwise with right sides facing and place a piece of batting underneath (figure B).

4. Sew along the two short sides using a 1/4-inch seam allowance (figure C).

5. Clip corners, turn, press and hand-stitch lower edge closed. Note: If you prefer, you can close with 1/4-inch-wide fusible adhesive tape.

6. Make two parallel stitching lines 1/2 inch apart through the center of the cover page (figure D). These will create the "spine" of the book.

7. For the inside pages, fold in half with central pages facing and stitch close to fold to form a small tuck (figure E). This will help to fit inner pages between outer pages.

8. To assemble the book, align inner pages inside the cover, checking to be sure you have the proper sequence of images and that all pages are right side up (figure F).

9. Make two rows of stitches about 3/8 inch apart through center of book.
