Project designed by Becky Meverden.
Materials:
Premo! Sculpey polymer clay
- white - #5001
- beige - #5092
Granitex
- blue - #3004 - for a boy
- red - #3005 - for a girl
two black seed beads
3/16-inch Kemper circle cutter - optional
7/16-inch Kemper heart cutter
one-inch bar pin back
fine-tipped permanent marker
toothpick
Nublade Kato clay knife
pasta machine or brayer
E6000 glue
Steps:
1. To condition the clay, roll it out in a log again and again until it's warm and pliable.
Diaper
2. Roll a 1-1/8-inch ball of white clay. Flatten it into the shape of lips. The center should be approximately 1-1/2-inch wide. Taper the clay from the center to each side. Both ends should have a 1/2" x 1/8" tail. It should measure approximately 4-1/2 inches from end to end (figure A).
3. Twist the tips together once. Set aside.
Baby
1. To make the baby's head, roll a 1-1/16-inch ball of beige clay. For they eyes, press two black seeds into the head. Use a toothpick to make two squint lines in each eye.
2. For the nose, roll a 1/16-inch ball of beige clay and press it onto the head below the eyes.
3. Use a toothpick or circle cutter to make the mouth. If using circle cutter, press half of the cutter into the head, which will create a smile.
4. To make ears, roll two 1/16-inch balls of beige clay into ovals. Press the ears onto both sides of head, level with the eyes. Use toothpick to draw two or three lines in the inner part of each ear (figure B).
5. Place the head in the left side of the diaper (figure C).
6. To make the legs, roll two 3/8-inch balls of beige clay into 3/4-inch-long logs.
7. To create feet, bend one end of each leg up slightly and shape it into an ankle and a foot.
8. For toes, roll ten 1/16-inch balls of beige clay. Line them up into two sets of five and press them onto each foot. Place the feet into the other end of the diaper (figure D).
9. Create a bow using Granitex blue for a boy or red for a girl. Using a pasta maker or a brayer, flatten the polymer clay to 1/32-inch thick or at the #5 setting on the pasta maker. Use the clay knife to cut two strips 3/16" x 1-1/4" long. Cut off a triangle section at the end of each strip to make it pointed. Place it onto the diaper crossing at the top (figure E). For a bow, use a heart cutter to cut out two hearts. Use a toothpick to dot around the perimeter of each heart. Place the hearts onto the diaper over the crossed part of the ribbons with tips touching. For the center of the bow, roll a 3/16-inch ball of clay and press it onto the area where the hearts touch. Use a toothpick to make a line in the center of the clay (figure F).
Finishing
10. Bake at 265 degrees for 30 minutes. Let cool.
11. Use a marker to write on diaper "It's a Girl (Boy)!"
12. Glue the pin back to the back of the diaper.
