Figure A
Materials:

small school picture
polymer clay (2-oz. bar, any color)
toothpicks
decorations (an example is alphabet pasta)

Steps:

  1. Roll out the clay on a flat surface.
  2. Have an adult trace the child's hand with a toothpick.
  3. Place the photos in the palm of your hand.
  4. Roll out a thin "snake" of clay to border the picture and help adhere it to the hand.
  5. Decorate the hand in any way you choose. One way is to use alphabet pasta to spell names.
  6. Insert toothpicks along the fingers for support (figure A).
  7. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes at 250 to 275 degrees. (The baking temperature is low so that the paper won't burn.)
Following is a variation of this project:

Photocopy Picture Transfer

Steps:

  1. Have a local copy center copy a favorite photograph as a reverse image in black and white. They will make it any size you wish.
  2. Roll out white or off-white clay, make the handprint, and press the image into its palm.
  3. Wait five minutes, then bake for 20 to 25 minutes at 250 to 275 degrees.
  4. Once it has cooled, pull off the paper to reveal the image, which is stamped into the clay.
* Note: A permanent image is created because copier ink has a special reaction with the clay.
