Materials:
Caron Wintuk 4, (3 oz. skein)
a yarn made of 100 percent Monsanto Acrylic Fiber; 1 skein #970 Crayons Ombre
Knitting needles, #6 and #10
16" circular needle, #10 or size required to knit to gauge
Crochet hook, size F
Scrap cotton yarn, about 3 yds.
Size: Directions are given for baby hat. Changes for toddler hat are given in parentheses.
Gauge: 7 sts = 2" (No. 10 needles)
Notes: Hat is made in Double Knitting, a technique that produces a tube of knitting with knit stitches visible on both sides of work. When working Double Knitting, 2 rows = 1 rnd. When working this technique, slip all stitches as if to purl.
Hat:
With crochet hook and scrap cotton yarn, ch 50 (60). (Note: One side of ch is smooth, while the other side has tiny bumps; work on side with small bumps.) With #6 knitting needles and Crayons Ombre, k 1 st in each bump across crochet ch until there are 50 (60) sts on needle.
Row 1, Part A: Change to #1O needles. * K 1, bring yarn to front and sl 1 as to p, bring yarn to back; repeat from * across.
Row 1, Part B: Repeat Row 1, Part A-(Parts A and B 1 rnd Double Knitting). Continue to repeat Row 1, Parts A and B until 6" (8") from beg.
Tube Opening: Holding 2 empty knitting needles parallel, separate sts to these 2 needles-sl sts on back needle, k sts on front needle. SI front sts to circular needle and work in k 1, p 1 ribbing, turn and work in k 1; p 1 ribbing across sts on back needle. Continue working in rnds of ribbing as established until 3" (4") from beg of ribbing. Bind off in ribbing.
Finishing:Carefully remove scrap cotton yarn from starting edge.
Tassels: Make 2. Wrap yarn around 5" cardboard about 25 times. Tie one end securely; cut opposite end. About 1" below top knot, wrap a length around bundle several times. Tie off and secure. Sew a tassel to each top point of hat.
