Guest Christine Angeli demonstrates how to keep the minds and hands of children busy with some resourceful ideas that are easy, inexpensive, and utilize items around the house. Her projects include a quacking duck made from a plastic drinking cup, sponge, and wet string; a matching wand and tiara; and a mask made from a wire hanger, knee-high stockings, junk jewelry and odds-and-ends.
Tiara and Matching Wand Materials:
two plastic straws
four to six yards of colored star wire in assorted colors
four to six yards of curling ribbon in assorted colors
Steps:
To make the wand:
- To make the wand stick, place the end of one straw into another by pinching and wiggling it in place.
- Cut a 2-foot length of star wire and push through straws.
- Cut two to three, eight-inch lengths of wire and push ends through one end of straw to create an oval.
- Press down at top of oval and pinch. Add streaming ribbons.
To make the tiara: - Measure child's head size and cut a piece of star wire to fit around. Use wire as tiara base by forming it into a circle.
- Allow child to wrap extra pre-cut lengths of colored wire as desired.
- Add curling ribbon to back of tiara.
