Guest Becky Meverden designed and demonstrated this project.
Materials:
2-ounce block of Premo Sculpey in each:
- #5521 fluorescent green
- #5003 fluorescent pink
- #5562 ultramarine blue
- #5001 white
- #5042 black
24-gauge black Fun Wire
wire cutters
5/16" Kemper heart cutter
5/16" Kemper circle cutter or toothpick
index card
2" keychain
baking dish or cookie sheet
oven thermometer
Steps:
1. For the upper wings: Roll two 7/8-inch balls of green. Flatten and shape each into 1-1/2" x 1/4" wings. Press together (figure A).
2. To make the inner layer, roll two 1/2-inch balls of pink, flatten and shape each into 1-1/8" x 1/8" teardrops. Press onto center of each upper wing.
3. For lower wings: Roll two 3/4-inch balls of green. Then flatten and shape each into 1-1/4" x 1/4" wings. Press together against the upper wings.
4. To make the lower wings' inner layer, roll two 7/16-inch balls of pink, flatten and shape into 1" x 1/8" teardrops. Press onto center of each lower wing (figure B).
5. Use a heart cutter to indent hearts all over the pink inner layers of the wings (figure C).
6. Cut a two-inch piece of black wire and bend in half. Twist the ends together, leaving a 1/8-inch loop where the wire was bent in half. Press this wire into the top of wings (figure D). This is where the key ring will attach later.
7. For the body: Roll a 11/16-inch ball of blue into a 1-1/2-inch tapered log. Place the body onto the wings (figure E).
8. Roll two 1/8-inch balls of white and place onto the top of the body for eyes. For pupils, roll two 1/16-inch balls of black and press onto the center of the eyes (figure F).
9. Roll a 3/16-inch ball of blue and press onto body under the eyes for a nose.
10. For the mouth: Press half of the circle cutter into the head to make smile, or use a toothpick to draw a smile.
11. Cut two, one-inch long pieces of black wire for antennae. Twist one end of each wire around a pencil or smaller round object until 1/4 inch is left straight. Press each straight end into the top of the body (figure G).
12. Bake at 265 degrees for 30 minutes. Attach key chain when cool.
Tip:
To make a plant poke, omit the wire in step 6 and press a bamboo skewer into the center of the wings. Continue on with the rest of the steps.
