Figure B
Host Renai Ellison shows how to turn a simple wooden table and chair set into make-believe pieces for a child's room (see photo at right).

Materials:

child's-size table and chairs
sandpaper
semi-gloss paint to go with a child's room decor
paintbrushes
scissors
cutout paper imagery to decoupage onto the table and chairs
craft glue or decoupage water-based glue/sealer
paint pens
antique stain (optional)
cloth
clear acrylic sealer

Steps:

  1. Lightly sand furniture so that it will take the paint. Wipe clean.

  2. Paint the table and chairs and let dry well.

  3. Glue cutout images onto the table surface, around the edge of the top and on the legs. Glue imagery to the chair backs to match the table (figure A).

  4. If desired, draw more images with paint pens. If images lend themselves to an antique look, you might want to apply an antique stain (figure B). Dab it off with a cloth, and let dry.

  5. Apply two to three coats of clear acrylic sealer, sanding lightly between coats.

* Note: The clip-art books used on show are available from Dover Publications.
