For her second project, Carolyn Madvig transforms an ordinary wooden frame into a dynamic hearth and home frame.

Materials:

wood frame
coordinating papers
cutting mat
craft knife
polymer gloss medium
1" brush
buttons
instant glue
high-gloss polyurethane
1-1/2" foam brush

Steps:

1. Purchase an inexpensive wood frame from any craft store or a finished wood frame from a dollar store. It needs to be a simple design, flat, without lots of molding.

2. Pick two to three coordinating papers to cover it.

3. Measure the width of the frame sides and cut the paper slightly wider.

4. Apply papers in layers with polymer gloss medium (figure A).

5. Apply additional medium and rub over the paper carefully with your finger to ensure that it’s adhered well and all air bubbles are worked out.

6. Let the frame dry for approximately an hour.

7. Turn the frame over and trim the excess paper even with the edges of the frame using a craft knife (figure B).

8. Cut leaf shaped and triangular shaped pieces of coordinating paper and apply them over the first layer of paper using polymer gloss medium. Let dry (figure C).

9. Apply two to three coats of polyurethane to the frame, allowing it to dry completely between each coat approximately 1/2 hour to an hour (figure D).
