Heather Wells loves attending yard sales and collecting articles for her next craft project. She has always been creative and studied textiles at art school. She came up with the idea to make her own lamps for a project and has since enjoyed making a variety of unique styles. Although the process is very meditative in itself, people have a great reaction to her lamps, so it's become very rewarding too! She makes a hand-woven cylinder lamp.

Materials:

pre-made cylinder lamp with a modified base and self-adhesive shade
clear glue
sharp small scissors
plastic beads
spray lacquer
heat retardant spray
quilling paper in variety of colors

Steps:

1. Dismantle the pre-made cylinder lamp (figure A). The shade will be woven and later the lamp components will be re-assembled.

2. Determine a pattern for the lamp and the color palette (figure B).

3. Lay the quilling paper strips horizontally covering the height of the cylinder, peeling back the protective paper to expose the sticky cylinder a few inches at a time (figure C).

4. Piece by piece; weave the strips of quilling paper vertically around the cylinder to create the pattern (figure D).

5. Once the strips have been woven around the cylinder, tuck the strips back on themselves (figure E).

6. Trim the excess horizontal strips.

7. Glue the excess strips on the top and bottom of the cylinder using clear glue (figure F).

8. Trim off the excess strips.

9. Re-wire the lamp.

10. Spray with lacquer. Let dry. Then spray with heat retardant spray and let dry.
