Project by Linda Facci from Brooklyn, N.Y.

There is no end to Linda's energy and talent. To prove it, this magazine design director by day shows examples of how she fills her nights and weekends: in this project, a resourceful towel rug.

Materials:

3 different-colored cotton towels *
scissors
needle
strong thread

* Note: Towels should be washed and dried before making a rug. What a great way to reuse old/damaged towels!

Steps:

1. Cut towels into 1-inch strips (figure A).

2. Take one strip of each of the three colors and sew the three ends together (figure B).

3. Braid the three strips together (figure C).

4. When that strip is completed, sew three more strips onto that braid (figure D) and continue braiding. Continue with the rest of the towel strips to create a very long braid.

5. Once you have a long enough braid: On a flat surface, start to coil the strips into an oval shape (figure E).

6. Start in the center of the rug and sew your braids to each other so the rug doesn't uncoil. Turn over and enjoy your rug!
